Washington AP. Antoinette Slovik, widow of Pvt. Eddie Slovik, reacts as Army Secretary Alexander upholds the WWII conviction and execution for desertion. Welfare recipients in Erie will receive interest free loans due to a budget impasse. Beginning Monday August 15, those missing regular checks can obtain loans, repayable by signing the next assistance check to the bank by power of attorney, per State Welfare Secretary Frank Beal. Eligible individuals should contact local assistance offices to learn loan processing dates.
In Harrisburg a $10,000 Pennsylvania Daily Lottery winner, Gladys Panisewicz, 43, was arrested on receiving stolen property and theft charges related to the theft of 9,000 lottery tickets from a state warehouse. Juveniles ages 13 and 16 allegedly stole the tickets. Panisewicz was released on $1,000 bail while the youths were sent to their parents.
Billy Carter, 40, will resign as managing partner of the Carter peanut business in Plains Georgia. Trustee Charles Kirbo confirmed the move noting he has left the position and will keep his 150 percent interest in the company. Carter says outside business interests and time demands since his brother became president prompted the step. He plans to spend more time with family while retaining other holdings including a service station and acreage in Sumter County and a stake in the Carter family farm.

The Enterprise completed a five and a half minute glide over the California desert atop a Boeing 747 before landing on a dry lake bed. Astronauts Fred Haise and Gordon Fullerton piloted the test craft as crowds watched. In Wyandanch Long Island a 57 year old man and his daughter were shot to death in their car while the woman's 5 year old son hid in back. A young man fled the scene Friday night as investigators ruled out any Son of Sam imitation. The victims were Cheryl Bogen and Isaac Dinkins from Hempstead. their son Albert Bogen survived. The shooting happened about 9 45 p m in front of the Bantan Vinyl Inc factory. a shotgun was fired at close range through an open window.
