City approves 12 percent police pay rise for two years
City Council unanimously approved the first negotiated wage package for police officers. The contract provides a 12 percent across the board increase over two years with a wage reopener at year three. It also grants $2.50 per hour for each off duty hearing or court hour up to a $10 cap, plus eight cents per mile for Erie County courthouse trials. Mayor Joseph Furst led negotiations with Police Chief Frank Carnegie, noting the settlement was a compromise. Fire department talks will follow similar patterns under a new state law enabling wage negotiations and arbitration if needed.
