Routine Day Soles New King Of Space Altitude

Maj Robert M. White, aged 86, set a near space altitude aboard the X15 rocket plane, reaching just under five miles as crowds in a Southern California desert watched. White called it routine test flying, downplaying the milestone while the craft climbed toward the edge of space. Bureau marks 25th year of compensation payments in Corry

James Rogaberry, manager of the Corry office, announced the 25th anniversary of unemployment compensation payments. From February 1938 to March 1960 benefits totaled about 580000 for Corry workers, with the state fund built from employer taxes and interest earnings totaling roughly 182 million by 1960. Roseberry noted local benefits supported merchants and kept the economy steady, while the Corry office handled 1150 new applicants, 199 nonagricultural jobs filed, and 275 claims for unemployment compensation in the past year.

Fire Sweeps Navy Mine Sweeper Exultant Five Die

Fire ripped through the engine room of the USS Exultant, a 170 foot Navy mine sweeper, about 70 miles southeast of Savannah Friday night killing five crewmen and injuring others. The ship, one day out of Charleston bound for Miami, was towed to Savannah for aid as sister ships and a destroyer assisted. The Navy later said no explosion occurred and details were withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Exultant, launched in 1953 and commissioned in 1954, carries a crew of about seven and a half dozen officers and men. The Tropicana reported a distress slip and later confirmed the Exultant’s severe damage to the engine room.

7 Area Murder Cases Slated For Grand Jury

Fraser County murder cases will be reviewed by the August grand jury convening Monday. 24 jurors will hear indictments against Jerald Riddle, Lloyd Resinger, and Douglas Keller for the killing of 68 year old Robert Warren Mays in Rockland Township last July. Also indicted are Lloyd Shuffstall for the murders of his wife Vera Shuffstall and neighbor Harold DuPont on May 23 1960.

Government Of Laos To Resign Amid Rebel Move

Radio Vientiane quoted by Saigon said Premier Tigo Samsonith will resign to let rebels appoint a new regime. The rebel station offered no independent confirmation. Samsonith’s cabinet is in Litang Prabang 140 miles from Vientiane as rebels claim to expel all U.S. personnel and seek Soviet aid, with about 733 Americans in Laos and 261 linked to military aid.

Police investigate an early morning burglary at Rexford Still's barber shop and sports store in Spartansburg. Entry was gained by smashing the front door glass. a small amount of change, a tartan of 22 shells, and a holster were stolen but the holster was dropped outside. Union City Man, 68, Missing Since Tuesday

John Fitch, 68, of Union City, has been missing since Tuesday after wandering from his sister’s car in Erie. His sister Mrs John Rice notified Erie police when he did not return to the car in the municipal parking lot behind the First National Bank. Fitch, who is described as tired, remains unfound four days later as police broadcast his description.
