Studebaker Workers Prepare for Pay Cut Vote Today
In South Bend Indiana thousands of Studebaker employees vote on a wage reduction plan to lower costs. The CIO United Auto Workers union urged acceptance citing necessary measures for competitiveness after a six month period with a nearly nine million loss. The proposal eliminates piecework and incentive pay, shaving about 1 to 8 percent from payroll with some workers facing 12 to 40 dollars weekly cuts. Top executives had already accepted 20 to 30 percent cuts on salaries above 20 thousand. A previous vote failed narrowly as the union, with about 10,500 members, considers a second ballot before contract termination notice.
