United Press dispatch from Washington reports the House Ways and Means Committee voted 12 to 11 to report favorably the Guffey coal bill, seen as a key step in cleaning up the administration's legislative slate. Lorry voters may register tomorrow at their local registrar locations from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. 6 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Permanent registration has been granted in third class cities and aims to swell enrollment. All voters must register on August 13 20 or 27 to be eligible for fall balloting. Registration blanks with the required date were distributed today by the Democratic city committee.
Dozens of Kings supporters, long-time Corry residents, are expected to testify on his behalf at the sentencing for manslaughter in the July 3 death of Lawrence Wield. King pleaded guilty to a reduced manslaughter charge. Judge Rossiter set Thursday for sentencing.
John R. Davies Jr. 92, former president of Duquesne Trust Company, was brought to West Penn Hospital in critical condition from a chest wound believed to be self-inflicted. A Fairmont Avenue maid found him in the basement with an automatic revolver nearby.
Harrisburg Aug 12 Persons who desert their Works Progress Administration jobs will forfeit eligibility for direct relief, state emergency relief administrator Robert L Johnson ruled. The policy, stated by relief board member John Bon, marks WPA as an organized effort to maintain skills and provide constructive jobs until private opportunities improve. If the national policy remains unchanged, there will be no direct relief for workers who quit after their first WPA paycheck.
Harrisburg August 12 Governor Earle named H Edgar Barnes to fill the vacancy caused by Justice Alexander P Simpson's death. Barnes, former Secretary of Revenue, resigned to campaign for the high court seat. He faces Judge Michael A Musinanno in the September 17 Democratic primary and both major party nominees likely will be seated after November 5, with voters choosing two winners.
Special police on guard at Sacramento county jail held three suspects in the slaying of Chief Elton Fish of North Sacramento, the fourth coast chief killed in 30 days. Police feared mob violence after crowds gathered, though no threats were made. The trio Alfred Paine, Hugh Smith, and George Wallace were moved or may have been moved from the jail. Paine reportedly confessed to firing the fatal shots.
A caravan of Here County Historical Society members traveling to the land of Cornplanter Indian chief will stop in Erie tomorrow. It will travel through Waterford Union City Corry Youngsville and Warren then proceed up the Allegheny toward Oneville and to the reservation.
Sy United Press reports from Emlenton on August 12 that Homer Gardner of New Castle was flying passengers for hire in a privately owned plane from an unlicensed airport. Gardner died en route to Oil City after the crash as witnesses said the craft nosed up then dropped 100 feet. Clyde Froas, a passenger on a $1 sightseeing flight, suffered multiple fractures and facial lacerations.
The state emergency relief board opens a Corry unit with offices on the Municipal Building's second floor. Anna Belle Astate of Edinboro named district supervisor. staff includes Dorothy Whiteley and Dorothy Spiesman, with Alma Cunninghamm as budget clerk. Seven investigators resume duties from Corry. R L Mead based in Union City. Establishment aims to concentrate files and offices in district centers. Meadeville also maintains a branch. Relief recipients will report to the Corry office. total caseload to be set after initial planning.
Three wrecks occurred over the weekend with no serious injuries. George Maloney and Edward Whiteley, both residents, collided on West Main Street. Whiteley’s car was severely damaged and towed to a garage. A Pittsburgh traveler had a wheel detach on Center Street, also towed for repairs. A later report described a collision between Union City and Riceville where occupants escaped injury after the car fell into a culvert, engine at the ground.
Fred Boice, 45, a lineman for the Erie Lighting Company, died after touching a 2,800 volt transmission line while on a pole at Avonia, near Drie. He was pronounced dead almost instantly after hospital attempts to revive him failed for over an hour. He is survived by his widow.
President Roosevelt may issue a national reply within a fortnight or two addressing attacks on the New Deal from former President Hoover and other critics. Washington August 2 Democratic leaders said the House would not accept the Senate Finance Committee plan to raise taxes on small incomes down to 800 dollars. The Senate panel moved to approve a 500 million measure transforming a tax on wealth into a tax on everyone, triggering a likely pitched battle in the Senate. House Democrats predicted the plan would fail to conform to the president’s program and would not pass the current rates. Leaders stressed the little fellow should not be taxed and vowed to fight the Senate proposal next session.
Preliminary plans were made today for reforestation in Chautauqua county New York by the CGC contingent arriving at the Panama camp on Goshen road early this morning. One hundred forty five youths reached the camp and about fifty more workers will join soon. The unit will plant trees burn brush collect seeds and assist timber improvement. The first project is road prep to the camp. Visitors may come but should wait until camp is completed. Access via gravel road to Panama Rocks then park road and a half mile toward the camp location. Goshen road is the first dirt road to turn from the gravel road. Signs will guide from the main highway to the camp. It is about one mile from Panama.
Washington August 12 Sm. William Borah Jane was favored as the 1936 Republican presidential nominee in a nationwide poll by Robert M. Lucas, former executive director of the Republican National Committee. Letters were sent to 2400 county chairmen, 300 flyers, and 80 Young Republicans. 1,560 replies came from 1,036 counties.
