Congress weighs intervention in airline strike dispute
Wirtz acknowledged Congress may act over the threat to the national transportation system, but many members doubt the strike creates a national emergency. After months of futile talks, the AFL-CIO International Association of Machinists struck several airlines on July 8. Three weeks later President Johnson stepped in, negotiators proposed a three year 72 cent per hour raise for top mechanics earning $3.52, but the plan was rejected July 31 by a 32 vote margin.
