United Press reports a major Allied offensive in Picardy and a northern thrust toward the Vesle River. French and American troops are said to be mounting a two-front assault as artillery dominates and advances push toward German lines despite uncertain timing.
The consolidation of the Union Railroad and Pennsylvania Railroad routes will take place on Saturday August 14 with A L Bottroll appointed as first assistant to President Martin. The PLR telephonic offices will be relocated to the consolidated building and the passenger ticket operations merged, with staff changes to follow.
A special ceremonial event at Star Hall installed twenty three Past Grand Degrees with Roy J.D. Banan of Morrisburg as Grand Master and Walter A. Hall of Philadelphia as Grand Secretary. Attending were Mut Oranda W Ed Marsh Gerry Deputy Master Fr HB Melanin Union City Grand Warden P G Clank Warren Grant Treasurer C1. Auwr Grand Marshal CB Reynolds Grand Herald Dell Johnson and other officers. A visit to Lodge 1, 0.0. 0 followed with over 50 members of the order attending, including dignitaries from Union City and Welttabirg while members from several lodges joined the celebration.
A heavy morning storm caused widespread damage in the city and surrounding farms. Gardens were toppled, fruit trees blown down, and several trees fell across streets. Crop loss reported in multiple areas with some properties spared.
Word came that Rudolph Beck of Bria in Wimire died in France on July 20 amid acute ailments while serving in the Naval Reserve. He was 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfinmikl Beck of Twewd Ian, nephew of Ti Beck, and a well known local youth connected with coal and lumber interests. Several Old friends mourn his loss.
Total reported from the drive lists 1852 American casualties with 287 from Army and 1 as Navy. The breakdown shows 134 killed in action and 44 from other causes, 29 wounded severely, 49 wounded lightly, 10 missing in action, and 8 from other categories. Names and details are partially legible.
The American Kloumoor Mora, 102% tons, was shelled torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine northeast of a town near the Diamond Sea off Cape Iattorus. The Navy Department announced the loss this morning and says the Diamond Showls was also sunk in the encounter.
A Columbus farewell event honored D Warren DeRosay the featured speaker at a community reception. Bl Monroe introduced Mr Peltosay who delivered an engaging address as many locals from Tunbil and nearby areas attended. A fountain pen was presented to the departing youth and Milas Nette Pierce of Union City visited during the day.
Allied forces under Haig have begun a major assault in Picardy, capturing towns and villages in the first hours. Foch directs British and French units to press against German lines with hundreds of tanks. The drive seeks to seal off the German threat to Amiens, with early objectives achieved.
A Willan Ttrliet and Home Service meeting of Corry Chapter American Red Cross was held in Sommeress Tomsyasta after noon with large leadership turnout. Members discussed securing household goods, child education funds, veteran family support, and continued Red Cross Home Service efforts to assist returning soldiers and widows amid wartime duties. Weather forecast predicts possible thunder showers tonight with cooler temperatures tomorrow.

A large barn on the Leo Nollinger place, known as the Key, burned shortly after 1 40 o clock. The fire destroyed the barn and most farm machinery with crops and harvest loss. The barn, owned by the Caroline Keppel estate, was insured. The Altruistic Circle meets Friday afternoon from 1 to 5 at Mrs. Tred Ross's home on Worth Street for Red Grass work and refreshments.
