Apollo 16 astronauts return from lunar voyage

Apollo 16’s crew David Scott James Irwin and Alfred Worden reentered Earth's atmosphere landing about 285 miles north of Hawaii after a 12 day mission. They brought back moon rock samples and nearly 2 miles of film while describing a potential ancient lunar crust and thin regolith over solid bedrock at Hadley Planum.

County crews complete resurfacing projects amid ongoing road work

Erie County PennDOT crews finally resurfaced East Main Street East Columbus Avenue and North Center Street after earlier funding woes. A two car crash on East Columbus injured two women and highlighted brake failures in one vehicle. An autopsy was planned for Earl Klingensmith after a fatal rural road crash near Warren. Moonquakes Hint At Deep Lunar Magma Regions

Scientists expect a weekend surge of moonquakes near perigee to pinpoint a deep lunar zone where most tremors originate. Using Apollo 12 14 and 15 seismometers, Dr. Gary Latham says data could locate regions possibly containing pools of hot liquid rock and reveal magma movement beneath the moon’s surface.

Sunday Booze for Sunday Drivers Only in Erie County

Governor Shapp signs a bill allowing liquor service in bars on Sundays from 1 to 10 PM starting tomorrow. Tax Reduced Vote Promised On Pay Budget in Harrisburg

The proposed 2.3 percent income tax rate, down from 2.5 percent, will be put to a vote next week as top Democrats inform Gov. Shapp of a budget tax plan. A $40 million stopgap emergency appropriation backs pay to state workers, with 29,000 not paid this week. Treasurer Grace Sloan says $9 million in paychecks will be issued Monday.

State Police Rule Sparta Fire Suspicious Origin

State Police reported the Most Hardware Store fire in Spartansburg as suspicious in origin. Fire Marshal Albert Vota cited extensive damage preventing determination of the exact source while noting arson-related fire spikes in the area and a 3:20 am warning call. Damages were about 80 000 dollars and residents already pledged 560 dollars toward a reward as investigators continue.
