Shotgun Slayer Gets Life Term
M Bowles 38 founder of The National Association for the Advancement of White People was convicted by a district court jury of murder with malice and sentenced to life in prison for the shotgun slaying of his brother in law James Harvey on May 4 at Loeb Texas. Witnesses said Harvey slapped Mrs Bowles during a family argument the day before the shooting.

Unemployment Rises 6.6 Percent in July, Local Report
The Pennsylvania Employment Service reports 8398 total unemployment claims in July, a 6.6 percent rise from June and 4.5 percent above January. Temporary layoffs due to weather and vacations, plus student availability, helped push numbers higher. The TUC program began June 19, with 134 new claims first week and 19 in July. Active applications reach 1029, the highest since last September. Most firms expect little nearterm change, with few openings and recalls of furloughed workers. Seventeen interviews were conducted, 14 partially employed, and 26 disqualified for benefits. A total of 710 weeks were claimed under TUC in July. Ike calls for curb on price increases.

Rescue Man From Sea During Catalina Run
Hollywood man Richard W. Taylor, 28, swam three miles last night after his speedboat lurched into heavy seas off the coast. As the circling motorboat threatened to strike him, Coast Guard cutters responded, one towing the craft after it ran out of gas and was left adrift. Taylor called for help and reported the incident shortly after 8 p.m.

Joy Ride Here Ends In Near Tragedy
A stolen Plymouth hardtop wreck on West Main Street left John Foster 15 of R D 1 Corry with a deep head wound and blood loss. Foster’s companion Clifford Proper 21 was driving when the car skidded off the road. Foster was hospitalized in satisfactory condition at Corry Memorial Hospital. Proper and Foster have police records. The crash was reported to State Police late last night. A second item notes Mai lor Thorhill, great granddaughter of General Gam Houston, died at 58 in Houston Texas. she was a former VP of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Warren city police seek an armed bandit who robbed the Glade Keystone service station on Pennsylvania avenue at about 3 40 a m. The unmasked thief forced the attendant to the floor and took $64 from the cash register before fleeing into the night. Bruce Miller was inside the station when the holdup occurred and the gunman may have fled on foot or by car.
