Wartime dispatch reports Kaiser Wilhelm prepares to declare war on Italy after Germany demands compliance with alliance terms. A German assault on Belgium allegedly cost eight thousand lives, while naval forces mass near Italy's coast. The ultimatum to Rome has a midnight deadline.
London reports Germany poised to declare war on Italy with a Kaiser ultimatum to Victor Emmanuel the third. Paris confirms Italy may break with the Triple Alliance as Austrian demands strain relations. Belgian reports note German artillery repulsed near Liege with thousands killed and deserters executed. Belgian forces rally to defend Liege’s fortifications.
Daybreak saw renewed combat as German forces reportedly numbering around a hundred thousand pressed Belgian forts. Belgian airmen disrupted German progress while French aviators aided, and British relief was anticipated. U S Navy ordered patrols to enforce neutrality amid crisis.
A house fire in Franklin Anglia destroyed during a Polish wedding celebration. One man, Joe Polski, perished while another, John Apalka, suffered severe burns and was hospitalized in critical condition. Fire officials cited an unknown cause and the incident marred a planned wedding gathering.
Amsterdam reports the German fleet shelling Gulf of Finland fortifications near Dyebourg as of this evening. The Admlralty claims seventy five German vessels have now been siezed by port officials. In London an August 6 bulletin notes King N. orders for all big wireless stations to censor messages to prevent aiding conquered nations in the European war.
Since December City Commission hired Police Magistrate Shields the city collected 447.50 in fines. The prior period shows 236.76. Through 1919 fines paid by prisoners reached 247 while 198 were received in 1911. The new arrangement appears more satisfactory as arrests increased with the same period.
Corry residents note an important meeting of the Bik order at the alU home on North Center Street this evening. Fonter Davia urges all members to attend and discuss plans for the big annual clam bake and the group’s participation in upcoming bike association events within weeks.
London dispatch reports Italy defied Germany by choosing neutrality after receiving the Kaiser’s ultimatum. Rome confirms Italy will remain absolutely neutral, as stated to the British Foreign Office.
A large crowd gathers at Columbus Park for the annual Big Town Picnic honoring longtime residents. Seventy five or more Corry attendees enjoy the day while plans to formalize the picnic association advance. The Corry Grange sets August 2 for its next event at Crowell’s Grove with a meeting a week before.
Washington August 6 Mrs Wilson wife of the President remains critically ill at the White House with no hope of recovery. She passed a restful night yet showed no improvement as stimulants and oxygen are given. The President bears up under the hopeless condition while family members stay close.
