In Philadelphia, virologists led by Pennsylvania chief Satz race to identify a deadly flu like illness that killed 22 after a Legion convention. Federal doctors join state tests, with a possible 23rd death. swine flu possible but unconfirmed. A hotline handles hundreds of frantic calls as tests continue.
Dr Stephen Thacker of the Washington DC Center for Disease Control interviews Thomas A Payne of Chambersburg about a mysterious illness that killed many American Legion attendees at a Philadelphia conference. Officials say it was not bacterial and not linked to food or water. work continues to determine it was caused by a virus.
Associated Press reports reveal fear and confusion among American Legion Post 182 members in Lewisburg as 150-plus cases of a killer disease linked to a Philadelphia state convention raise questions. Edward Boak and Thomas Allandar express shock as officials in Harrisburg work to identify why only convention attendees were affected.
The Crime Commission says organized crime is moving into Pennsylvania from New Jersey, targeting Bucks County with syndicated gambling and other illicit activities. Secretary Alice McCray notes a fifteen thousand seventy dollar project includes four thousand eight hundred twenty seven dollars in Erie County aid from gasoline tax refunds and starts mid month. Two miles of Hammond road one tenth mile of Mitchell road and eight tenths mile of Murphy road will be graveled.
Two Erie youths, Michael Hess aged 18 and a 17 year old juvenile, surrendered to police after an armed robbery at Pasquale's Pizza in Erie. Hess faced charges of robbery and conspiracy with a firearm. the juvenile was turned over to authorities. About $108 was taken but later recovered. John McLean of Random Road assisted officers by providing a description after a noon dine-in.
Washington AP Carter urges House approval of a mail registration bill facing Republican opposition. Debate starts today with a likely final vote next week. Both sides expect passage and a Ford veto, Democrats ready to strike it as a campaign issue. Republicans accuse the measure of inviting fraud and government funding for drive groups. House leaders move the bill after Carter asked for prompt action. Albert says the request was standard and the bill aims to counter declining voter participation.
