Arson Suspected as Spartansburg Hardware Fire Destroys Store
A fire at Most Hardware in Spartansburg, possibly arson, destroyed the building and its contents after a 3 am warning call. Spartansburg Constable James Brink noted the caller, a woman, hung up after four words. Firefighters contained the blaze by 6:30 am with no damage estimates yet.

Construction Worker Slain Near Erie
A 50 year old construction worker William Marks of Center Valley Pennsylvania was killed near Erie after an altercation with Melvin Mitchell 37 of Erie. Mitchell a gunman facing murder charges fired two shots at Marks and another worker Clarence Jackson 33 of New Martinsville West Virginia was treated after a fragment struck his eye. The deaths occurred on a State Fish Commission dredging project near Manchester Road Erie by Capital Dredging and Dock Co of Lorraine Ohio. Governor Shapp urged Congress to boost funds for state water pollution enforcement agencies.
