London reports thousands of tons of equipment rushed to Britain for carrier planes to strike the Japanese homeland. Supplies flow by sea from England to Australia and into the northwestern Pacific. Three million Potsdam leaflets dropped on Japan as part of renewed psycho warfare. Paris reports Paul Ferdonnnet, known as Stuttgart traitor, shot at Fort De Montrouge after death sentence.
Neighbors discovered the Findley Lake cottage ablaze shortly after six this morning. Firefighters prevented spread to trees, but the frame building and all furnishings were lost. Miss Eva Kepler and Mrs. Forest Peiffer owned the property with vacationing Miss Kepler in Eau Claire Wisconsin. Also reported four members of a Lansdale family died in a transit crash nearby last night.
Paris dispatch reports Pierre Laval testifying at the Petain trial about a 1942 radio speech in which he expressed desire for a German victory. He said Admiral Leahy and U. S. officials questioned the remarks and that Petain objected to the phrase. Laval described altering wording to remove the direct claim of belief in victory. He stressed not resisting the change or intent at the time.
Fort Worth Texas August 4 The 25 year old corporal James E B Newman one of the men who endured three years in Japanese prison camps passed away after a long battle with tuberculosis and related complications Doctors in New Guinea and U S Army hospitals had given up hope but Newman sought to return home to his cottage He weighed 92 pounds at one point after years of starvation diets and lack of treatment for throat lung and stomach disease and he finally succumbed to exhaustion in the hospital scene at home after two days of rest and oxygen support.
The Zalneck firm begins excavation and equipment setup for a garage extension between the Hage properties on West Main and Wey Street. A 3 to 4 foot cut at the south end of the wood structure will be removed, with cement block walls to be poured and concrete footings installed. Bulldozer and power shovel will be used, jobs expected to take two or three days.
