Red forces smash toward German positions along the Silesia and Vistula lines as they threaten three Brittany ports. Carpathian advance nears the Czech border while German forces retreat from Jabonkow Moscow. Polish underground activity rises as Mazowie remnants suffer severe casualties.
Russian forces surged toward Silesia within 91 miles and pressed east Prussia from border towns. In the Carpathians they advanced near Czechoslovakia, while Krakow and Tarnow remain within striking distance. Baltic activity included patrols near Riga and coastward toward Liepaja as Rokossovsky’s forces maintain pressure east of Warsaw.
Local gasoline dealers and service stations report no new curtailment orders or trothes to reduce fuel. A Warren ration board notice said gasoline for Victory gardeners would stop, while a 30 day basis revision prompts talk of further cuts. Dealers say no changes in allotments have been advised, but supply reductions in the past two weeks are noted.
Allied forces cap tured Myitkyina, major Japanese base in northern Burma, after a long siege begun May 17. The fall gives control of two airfields on the Hump route to China and a crucial rail and road junction. Rome August 4 Allied entry into Florence seemed imminent as German forces retreated under relentless pressure from New Zealand and South African troops. From a ridge south of the city AP correspondent Lynn Heiningline reported smoke and sighted church domes while troops reportedly neared within three miles. Lt General B C Freyberg planned a possible entry for his forces after the Crete campaign.
