Washington, Aug. 4. President Roosevelt urged three changes to the $3.529 billion tax bill in an eleventh hour appeal to the Ways and Means Committee. The House pressed ahead under strict rules, allowing only amendments from the committee. Roosevelt proposed revising the joint return provision and adjustments to corporate taxes and personal exemptions, but the panel moved to approve its own changes. Chairman Coughton expressed surprise at the president's critique of treasury views on exemptions.

A typhoon swept past Guam causing extensive damage to a US Marine post with high winds of 120 miles per hour and a barometer drop to 20:04. No lives were reported lost. The center of the typhoon was ten miles east of Hers, with Pan American Airways noting wind speeds of 10 knots at San Francisco.
A two week timber hunters strike prompted state police to guard deliveries to Fayette county pits. Two CIO unionists were arrested for riotous destruction of property after pickets attacked trucks in Addison township. About 300 trucks began moving toward Uniontown amid scattered picket activity, while police patrolled to avert clashes between strikers and an independent union attempting to resume deliveries.
Fort Knox Kentucky August 4 a soldier died after a guardhouse riot in which guards fired warning shots over the heads of about 350 milling prisoners. The victim was Pyt Carl B Mecellan 18 of Bicknell Indiana. Funeral services were held in Bicknell as disclosed by Col. N Butler Briscoe the post commander.

State motor police announce that Mike Baesa of Columbus will face reckless driving charges after a collision on the Gorry Spring Creek Road near Corry. Mrs C Bennett and others suffered minor injuries as their car, a Pontiac driven by Albert Pox, collided with Baesa’s Chevrolet coach causing significant damage. Authorities say Baesa may be arrested on the charge following the investigation.

John Gronsti, 17, of West Wayne Street, left Derry hospital after minor injuries from being struck by a car driven by Forrey Green. Green said he was blinded by headlights and did not see the youth until too late.
