A collision three miles west of Corry sent four people to Corry Memorial Hospital after a joyride to the New York World's Fair ended in tragedy. The injured include Nancy Puckley 20 Judy Guth 14 James Guth 17 and Richard Griffith 18 all from Erie and Corry. Griffith suffered a knee fracture chest puncture and other injuries while Puckley endured a concussion and multiple lacerations. State police could not determine the crash cause.
A 35 pound four year old chimp named Johnny escaped from the Continental Circus at the World's Fair yesterday. He was chased by spectators and police before being captured after reportedly climbing onto a sightseeing bus.
A two hour riot erupted near a minor traffic accident in Kansas City Kansas injuring five policemen and a Black man. More than 1,500 African Americans clashed with police using bricks horses and guns until about 40 officers dispersed the crowd with police dogs. The melee began when patrolman Harold McDaniel and his dog tried to clear a path for emergency vehicles. McDaniel was struck with a brick. several assailants kicked him. A man was shot in the left arm after allegedly striking an officer with a brick and a bottle.
In Atlanta, officials report a two year increase of 551,828 in the number of Negroes registered to vote across the Southern states as part of a broader civil rights era trend.
The playoff game between the local Little League team and Aliquippa at Linesville tonight is postponed due to last night and morning rain. It has been rescheduled for tomorrow night at 6 o'clock weather permitting.
In Detroit at Tiger Stadium 22,000 spectators watched Edward Knipschield known as Captain Eddie fall 85 feet during a 100-foot high act at the police field day. Witnesses and police described a broken safety loop as the sole cause while investigators removed the pole to confirm details.
President Johnson ordered expanded U S naval forces in the Tonkin Gulf after North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats attacked the destroyer Maddox. The plan includes an extra destroyer, air patrols, and a policy to attack any future aggressors in international waters.
Tokyo AP reports North Vietnam charged four U.S. fighter bombers from Laos bombed a border post and village, calling it unprovoked. U.S. officials said no evidence supported the charge. The broadcast claimed the attack occurred about 50 miles northeast of Plaine des Jarres, with one villager wounded and extensive property damage.
Three North Vietnamese PT boats attacked the U S S Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin with torpedoes and 37 mm gunfire but caused no damage to the destroyer. The Maddox returned fire, and four Crusader jets from USS Ticonderoga joined the defense with rockets and 20 mm fire. The PT boats were driven off. two damaged craft limped away and a third was stopped. No casualties aboard the Maddox.

State Police report a rain slick two car collision on Route 8 eight miles north of Butler killed four people and injured three others. James Wagner 17 and Myra Ackerson 17 of Prospect were identified among the dead. The other two victims were believed to be North Carolina women. In hospital in Butler were Glenda Dunkle 16 Loyal Dunkle 14 and Carl Dunkle 11, all of Prospect. The crash happened near Route 138 intersection.
The Glass of 1964 at Corry area High School shows 102 of 205 graduates plan some form of higher education. About 69 intend colleges or universities, with 15 headed to state colleges and 53 to private schools. Vocational, technical, beauty and business programs, plus military service, also appear, and college acceptance rates among 122 applications reached 67.
The bodies of country singer Jim Reeves and pianist Dean Manuel were found in a light plane crash near Nashville. Reeves had been flying home from Batesville Arkansas when the single engine craft struck trees in Brentwood, ending a prominent musical career. The wreckage lay hidden for about 48 hours. Opry figures Marty Robbins Eddy Arnold and others helped identify the site and victims. Authorities reported heavy rain as a possible factor but offered no definite cause.
Jack Dempsey, 69, former baking champion and operator of a New York restaurant, has canceled all appearances for the next several weeks due to an attack of bronchitis. He was to appear at events in Colorado, his native state, this coming week.
