German forces retreating on a forty five mile front after crossing the Vesle river under British pressure. Soissons fell earlier as French and American advances push toward Fismes Venizel and east of Soissons. A German counterattack collapsed under a strong French blow while Americans push within six miles of Fismes Venizel.
American forces continued advances as German retreat broadens across the Somme sector. General Pershing estimates American losses up to Wednesday at about 12 000, with French and British units pressing advances behind advancing US troops toward Memes and Fismes. German rearguard actions and railway movements cited as Allied pressure increases.
Henry Vege was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when a team bolted after a hay rake nearby. The wagon horses pulled through a wire fence, dragging Mr Utegg four tenths of a mile to a meadow near W. B. Belden’s farm. He sustained severe lacerations and chest injuries and died at 2 PM Thursday. The Utemg farm lies about 24 miles south of the village.
A June 12 field service card was issued to Mrs. J. Se Drake, noting her husband Drake was quite well. The card marks the first word received by Mrs. Drake about his status and duty assignments.
Report from Paris by Uniten Presa says Herbert Hoover and other American officials escaped injury when a bomb exploded near their car during a German air raid over Bologna. Fragments struck witnesses as alarms sounded and the group rushed to safety.
The Standard Milling Company advances construction on a new addition to their Argon plant in the city. The building stretches between Life Building and the mill road, soon to join the main factory, with the north wall to be removed after completion. Supervisor McMilroy oversees the work as land remains owned by the company. The firm may buy more nearby land to extend the plant, with expansion potentially reaching other ships in the area tied to the New Jersey operation.
The Corry branch of the New York League will meet at Spissman’s Hot Cup Tuesday eight o clock. The meeting will discuss dairy matters and whether members join the organization. A Bufala speaker and Union City members will attend to discuss the milk situation.
Lee Wood who served in France for a year describes meeting Lab Regiment boys recently. He saw Capt. Lily Van Vyocy and Lent, Cassius Sours of the 172nd, and notes his division moved toward the frontier on the motor transport. Wood missed the chance to see Corry Company A’s group that had already left.
Monty Nielson a railroad brakeman was injured this morning around 6 oclock when he fell from a car near Lowell. He received treatment from Dr. N. Troy Gillette and was taken to Corry hospital. He sustained a broken shoulder blade and multiple scalp wounds but his injuries are not serious.
The War Department lists 206 American casualties through May including 114 killed in action, 66 wounded severely, 10 died of wounds, 9 missing, 2 wounded, and 5 other categories. Also notes relatives visiting Hamilton D. area, and local hospital auxiliary meeting scheduled for Wednesday at 2 PM in the city hospital parish. Mrs William Hudson receives letter from son Jengt Cec IC Hudson with overseas unit 12th regiment dated June 30 stating he is well.
Navy Department announced four schooners destroyed by an enemy submarine yesterday morning off Drift Island 25 miles southwest of Nova Scotia. Nine survivors reached a lifeboat and landed at Gannott Brook.
Corry reports a successful tag day with many volunteers selling toys to promote the Community Spirit drive. Early morning activity and steady sales by families and young workers indicate a strong response, with details to be compiled in a Monday report.
A cable from the War Department reports Corporal Ray Leg Cherry, 20, of Rouseville, killed in action in France on July 15. Born in 1899, he lived in Rouseville until May 1, 1918, when he enlisted in the Eight Machine Gun Battalion, Company D, Sixteenth. This is the first local casualty in the war within the immediate area.

Brooks with his father dived in Bre Ee was employed at the section as a baggage handler. At 1 o'clock Monday more dog Brooks was arrested at the sta ton.
North Exat reports Tay Wolf of Mun Road near the Gulf disturbed a staged car theft at about 4 am. He confronted a thief on the streetcar tracks, pistol whipped him to subdue, then fired as the thief fled. The assailant escaped, leaving behind clothing and incomplete details.
