Apollo 15 astronauts Scott and Irwin safely lifted off from the moon after three days of exploration. They drove the first lunar rover 17 miles, collected more than 230 pounds of samples, and planned two extra days in lunar orbit before returning to Earth.
Washington AP reports a contract settles with a 42 percent raise over 42 months for about 200000 trainmen. Pickets to be removed from 10 strikebound railroads at noon. The agreement ends an 18 day dispute across major railroads after marathon talks at the Labor Department.

A rural Democratic bloc in Harrisburg seeks reductions in the 3.24 billion current budget and the 2.5 percent gross income tax. They aim to drop spending and tax rates to at least 2 percent and cut at least to 1.0 billion. They claim strength to block passage without broad support from peers. Governor Shapp warns against crisis staffing and delays.
The GECAC called a meeting of Corry Union City and Albion mayors amid questions about Neighborhood Youth Corps and Child Day Care programs. The Journal questioned why Corry lacks NYCs despite a past teen job program, while Albion and Union City have day care.
