Father Freed on Habeas Corpus in Slaying Case
Richardsville resident Elmer Nichols, 46, awaiting murder trial, secured release from Jefferson County jail on habeas corpus after posting 10 000 bull bond set by Robert Morris. He had been jailed a month since June 28 after his 22 year old son Stabiley died from a shotgun wound during a quarrel at the Nichols home. Nichols said the shotgun discharged during a struggle for the weapon. He claimed the gun fired as his son refused a halt command. District Attorney William McKnight later quoted Nichols as saying the shooting occurred during the scuffle for possession of the gun.
