A Pennsylvanian gasoline coach struck by a railroad train near Oil City killed two youths, Warren teens Robert Mackay and Bertrand Teeple Jr, instantly, with two others, including Bertrand Teeple Sr, severely injured. The crash occurred as a group loaded a Chevrolet truck at a nearby farm, the truck demolished, and the cab splintered. The plan sets posted prices, bans rebates and concessions, forbids substitution of grades, prohibits vendor loans, and restricts inducements to break contracts. Heating oil rules require fair charges for burner service and parts.
Harrisburg Aug 2 Major Lynn G Adams state police superintendent announced a four month course for patrolmen and a five month course for detectives initiating September 1 for municipal and county police officials. Applications close once classes begin at Hershey state police school.
Attorney Blaine Kincaid hints Guy King 64 Corry will enter a plea before the September term of court. King faces murder charges in the Lawrence Field slaying. DA Mortimer Graham says most cases are set for the term unless King pleads. Grand and traverse jurors named. local names include Carl Taylor and Frank England among others.
Harrisburg Aug 2 The State Department announced Lebanon is the first municipality to receive a charter under the municipal authority act passed by the recent legislature.
Moscow dispatch reports the Congress of the Communist Internationale ordered Communists to cooperate with liberal parties against Fascism. Observers doubt the sincerity, fearing entry into Democratic groups to dominate them. A second resolution calls for a united anti Fascist front and criticizes past failures to unify social democratic parties.
Washington August 2 The White House offered no clear signal on whether President Rooseveld would approve restoring Spanish War Veterans pensions and benefits to pre 1923 economy act levels.
A severe storm swept the tri state area causing at least two deaths in Pittsburgh region and widespread damage. Flooded streets and cellars, washed out highways, and destroyed LWD projects disrupted transport from Ohio to Allegheny valleys. Walter J. Grosscup announced the resignation of Harry G. Banzhoff, secretary of the Pennsylvania liquor control board, effective immediately. Banzhoff said he will pursue private business, with a $6,500 annual salary noted. Ben G. Helsel to serve as acting secretary pending a new appointment. Banzhoff has served about a year and previously worked for IBM before joining the board.
Mandeville W Zenge a 26 year old jilted suitor of nurse Louise Suffer Bauer was seized in Chicago in connection with the murder of Dr Walter J Bayer. He denied knowledge of the crime as investigators questioned him. Bauer had married Bayer three weeks earlier after ending a seven year relation with Zenge.
