Inundation along the Erie region caused widespread street flooding and traffic disruptions. Authorities reported extensive rainfall with elevated water levels, cutting power to several blocks and forcing evacuations.
In the first anniversary week of the Son of Sam terror, the killer wounded 20 year olds Stacy Moskowitz and Robert Violante in Brooklyn. Moskowitz endured major brain surgery with poor survival prospects, while Violante lost an eye but remained alert. Police report heavy surveillance and 2,000 officers searching, with Beame adding 100 more cops to the task force as the attack toll rose to eight attacks, four dead, eight wounded.

Time quotes sources alleging Anthony Provenzano ordered cash deliveries via a Las Vegas courier with Fitzsimmons, Dorfman, and Colson named in the scheme. NBC adds a separate FBI-backed claim of more than $250,000 paid to Nixon aides to influence Hoffa.
A growing number of states require public officials to disclose funding sources and financial interests. The Council of State Governments cites 37 states with disclosure laws, 28 strengthened in four years. Authorities say laws work, boosting scrutiny and caution among officials. Florida’s constitutional amendment mandates assets, liabilities, net worth, and income sources or tax returns for many top officials. Some critics warned resignations or dissuasion, but few materialized.
