Warn Government Artificial Heart Raises Questions
A panel of scientists warns that an implantable artificial heart raises moral ethical legal and social issues to be resolved before public availability. They note cost recipient selection and definitions of death as key questions. Limited human testing could occur sooner than full availability, with funding from NHLI and Atomic Energy Commission totals cited. The report suggests medical criteria should guide access, not social worth, and legal guidelines must be prepared ahead of time.
