Doll maker apologizes to Eisenhower protesting purchase
New York reports that Doll maker David Rosenstein apologized to President Eisenhower for a protest over the purchase of Swiss dolls for his grandchildren. Rosenstein as National Doll Manufacturers Association president said the complaint came from an overzealous press agent and did not reflect his personal views. The release claimed the American doll industry was shocked by the purchase during a Big Four conference trip.

Congress near adjournment as housing and pay hikes stall
Leaders in both House and Senate aimed for tonight’s adjournment but disputes over public housing and pay raises for lawmakers stalled final actions. Three major measures remain unresolved including the housing bill, the Defense Production Act extension, and the $92 million appropriations bill. Conferees worked late with no agreed compromises, while many members have already left town and a euro-bound Senate delegation sails today.

Small businesses hurt by drop in contracts
A Senate committee warned that defense contracts to small firms fell sharply, risking closures. They reported small business awards at 8.0 percent of total for the year ending June 30, far below the prior 25 percent. Eisenhower sought 36,000 new public housing units annually for ten years, with Senate proposing 195,000 over four years, but the House rejected housing funding entirely, offering only 50,000 for one year.
