Workfare program to place relief recipients in jobs statewide
The 1949 Pennsylvania legislature approved a "Little WPA" to make relief less attractive by requiring able bodied dole recipients to work for their benefits. About 200000 of 39000 on relief rolls will be assigned by county boards to jobs matching experience and need.
