Oil Men Form Group to Curb Taxation in Erie County
Oil men in Dirie county plan an Erie County meeting at 8 15 p m August 2 1938 at the Lawrence hotel Erie to discuss petroleum industry issues for forming a permanent organization like nationwide county groups. W Purves Taylor says the Harrisburg based state association will supervise a local division to shield oil interests and customers from heavy taxes and bad laws. He cites Pennsylvania gasoline taxes and registration fees totaling about 90 million dollars yearly, plus a federal fuel tax and oil taxes, arguing motor tax revenues should fund highways directly. The industry, with large investment and payrolls, seeks coordinated action and a strong program to protect livelihoods.
