Union City Borough Council passed an ordinance requiring a 100 dollar cash bond to post political campaign signs. Signs must be erected no earlier than 30 days before elections and removed within ten days after, or the bond is forfeited. The bond is refunded within 30 days after notarized affidavit of removal.
In Baltimore talks to end a six day Westinghouse Electric strike ended suddenly Tuesday night after the Salaried Employes Association denounced management. Both sides agreed to meet again with a federal mediator at noon, while about 45 SEA members picketed outside two defense plants near the Baltimore Washington Airport. Separately, National Steel Corp reported first quarter earnings of 423.86 million, or 1.28 per share, up slightly from last year.
In Harrisburg the party chiefs expect a fair turnout for May 20 with county and city contests drawing interest. A key item is a constitutional amendment to reform Senate confirmations, forcing quicker action by governor and Senate on state posts.
