Turkish troops with fixed bayonets entered Istanbul University and forced about 2,000 sitdown strikers into army trucks. The students, protesting Premier Adnan Menderes government, were interned in camps and face martial law violations. Hollywood report Lana Turner's 11 year old daughter Cheryl escaped from a county run home for girls in Sylmar. The youth had been at El Retiro Home for Girls six weeks for psychiatric therapy and fled after climbing a chainlink fence with two other girls. Cheryl previously stabbed Johnny Stompanato in 1958 during a dispute with Lana Turner. the slaying was ruled justifiable homicide. Police treated the escape as a routine juvenile case with no special search planned.
A deadly storm system swept from the Great Lakes toward the Gulf Coast bringing torrential rain and tornadoes. A tornado struck Hathaway Louisiana injuring five and demolishing four homes as rain totals topped seven inches in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Police and Beaverdam area volunteers search for 12 year old William Duryee of RD 3 Corry Beaverdam who left home Thursday leaving a note debated as possible self harm while investigators consider he may have traveled to New York state. Searches in Donation Hill area north of Beaverdam yielded no trace. Duryee lived with his son club Duryee at RD 8 Corry.
The president of a Kentucky Negro college warned that students taking part in anti segregation protests could be expelled and the school closed. Demonstrations near campuses drew sit-ins in Savannah Austin Chattanooga with several arrests. In Concord North Carolina, four Black demonstrators were fined for trespassing. The Mississippi Legislature pushed bills targeting sit-ins with fines and jail terms.
A Carry Police Department officer was suspended after reports of an early morning driving escapade in which the off duty patrolman Julius Wolds was allegedly involved. He appeared for duty half an hour late as the department continued a full investigation before determining his status. In a separate note, Bert Hough 64 longtime head of District 20 United Steelworkers died after prolonged illness in a local hospital. Arrangements were made to return his body to Beaver County Pennsylvania for burial.
