Anniversary of U S Bargain the Louisiana Purchase
One hundred fifty one years ago today Americas made a great real estate buy when Napoleon sold the Louisiana Territory for 16 million dollars. The acquired region, later states from Louisiana to parts of Wyoming and Colorado, spurred westward growth and prosperity as settlers molded a vast stretch of land into a nation. In 1803 the cost averaged four cents per acre, financed by Treasury securities sold to American investors. By 1953 residents of these states had accumulated substantial savings through Series E and H United States Savings bonds.
