Three aviators from Germany and Ireland laid wreaths and flags on Floyd Bennett’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery in heavy rain. Von Huenefeld Koehl and Mizmorics offered symbols of remembrance aboard the Bremen while a pair of Irish and German flags marked the mound. The ceremony honored Bennett who aided their transatlantic flight.
William H. Bentley, 87, Civil War veteran of Company D, First New York Veterans Cavalry, died at 5:30 a.m. at his niece’s home, 218 West Smith street. He enlisted August 18, 1863, served with the Army of the Potomac, and was discharged July 1865. A longtime Columbus resident, he moved here about ten years ago. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Alexander and Company chapel, Center Street. Rev. W. Ti. Bartlett will officiate. interment at Columbus.
Proclamation designates Wednesday and Thursday May 2 and 3 as Clean-Up Days. Citizens urged to clean around property and remove fire hazards. Mayor Olin W. Bracken calls for generous participation to improve city appearance.
The Odd Fellows and the Lady Rebekah lodge plan an 109th anniversary program at I O O F Hall Monday night. Rev W B Bartlett will speak, with vocal and musical entertainment and a social session to follow. Public invited. program starts at 8:30 pm.
Preparations for an informal May party on Monday evening April 20 sponsored by the Modern Youth Club are progressing well under Mr. Black. A pleasing program will precede the dancing and a large crowd is expected for the concert and dance.
Corry High School will graduate a large class of about sixty five to seventy students at the annual commencement in the high school auditorium on June 6. Plans are under way for the event as the fifth period ends this week and classes for the class of 1928 will finish in the coming weeks. The fifth period marks a brief pause before commencement preparations begin. The Baccalaureate services are set for Sunday evening June 3, with the speaker yet to be announced.
Corry avoided the worst of a late spring storm that pelted western Pennsylvania. Reports from Pittsburgh show heavy snow in Kate, St. Marys, and towns east of Corry with several inches. The storm disrupted phone lines and telegraph service across the region as temperatures stayed cold and a warmer day was forecast.
Brig. General R. McCoy, Coolidge’s Nicaragua envoy, is summoned to Washington for consultations. The purpose remains unclear but may signal a shift in U S policy as rebel activity rises. Officials deny confirming aims, while hints of additional Marines surface pending McCoy’s talks.
Twenty five acts of heroism were recognized by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission at its spring meeting. Five Pennsylvanians received bronze medals for lifesaving actions, with one silver medal awarded. eight heroes died and pensions totaling 5400 were granted to dependents.
Warren county sheriff arrested Lowley Stormes of Columbus yesterday on a charge of operating an automobile in a reckless manner without an operator's license. The car, owned by Floyd Mentoy, reportedly caused injuries to a bystander and Stormes allegedly offered to return the vehicle to the garage. The youth was said to have had a driving license the previous year but did not obtain one this time.
A violent blast struck the Richfield Oil Company's tanker Richfield at the Bethlehem Ship Building docks in San Francisco today just before noon. Early reports stated more than fifty people injured and several believed killed. The explosion also damaged the adjoining Bethlehem Ship Building Company plant.
In Washington on April 27 reports say a Black candidate may win the late Rep. Martin B. Madden seat. Madden died of heart disease in his Chicago district, where a Black opponent, William J. Dawson, had been his closest foe. Madden’s death opens a path for a Negro successor amid a district with Black representation in state and city offices.
Tony Rezelle and others were cut and gashed by flying glass when Reselle’s car collided with a truck from Superior Dry Cleaning near the Washington and West Wayne streets intersection earlier today. Neither person was seriously hurt.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock for Albert Morton who died at Corry hospital after a brief illness. Rev John Hatch of Spring Seek officiated in Alexander & Co funeral parlors. Informant noted in Spring Creek cemetery with bearers Alvin Morton, Leis, Liverni and William Degenns.
Reports from Managua say a new rebel force under General Siron, separate from Sandino’s, has taken action in northern Nicaragua. The army, possibly Honduran and Costa Rican in origin, is linked to the La Joya mine raid and the alleged hostage of American miner George B. Martial. Official proof is lacking, but rumors claim Sandino is ill and inactive, while Marines move to confront the rebels in the mining district as several hundred troops land at Puerto Cabezas.
Formal notice states Pontiac and Oakland Automobile Company selects James Machines as local representative. Mr Maciones has leased the Star Garage on North Center Street as sales and display room. Four new Pontiac and Oakland models will arrive Monday and be put on display at the North Side garage. The agency will operate as the Star Garage Co.

The Anu scat market of the Grand Union Tea Company in the Masonic Temple building on North Center Street opened today as one of the citys largest and most modern grocery shops. Manager RF Vroomama and cashier B A Wykbush bring long Grand Union experience to the operation. Laws Lawson of Mayville is recovering from surgery at Corry Hospital.
