Big Harvest May Slow Food Prices

Washington AP The Agriculture Department anticipates a massive 1976 grain harvest that could slow rising food prices. The 1976 wheat crop may total about 2 billion bushels with a possible 6.4 billion bushel corn harvest. Last year’s bumper crops lowered feed costs and retail meat prices, but beef prices are rebound ing, signaling higher prices at retail in spring. Wholesale gains in beef and beet prices challenge passthrough to consumers, though long-term effects remain uncertain. Government experts expect some price relief but not across all foods, with meat costs likely to rise even as overall inflation stays subdued.
