Reports from Memphis and northern areas describe a Mississippi River flood in Kentucky and Tennessee driving farmers from flooded lands. Refugee camps form as authorities warn weeks remain before the river subsides and levee breaks threaten New Orleans and nearby towns.
Governor Fisher warns about cutting roughly 7 million from state appropriations as the House passes bills totaling 153 million dollars. The governor says if expenditures stay within revenue during the biennium the total could drop by about 87 million. Townsend, the secretary to the governor, and others have been pressed on the appropriation situation.
Roanoke April 2. Walter L Booth 18 a Troutville farmer remained alive after days of artificial respiration by friends. Physicians called his condition hopeless though he showed faint signs of life in the hospital. He was paralyzed from the waist down from a car accident operation that dislocated a vertebrae and caused chest injuries.
Reports from Elgin this afternoon indicate little new progress in the Elgin burglary case at the W. E. McCray store. Mr. McCray cannot give a definite total of loot, but several pairs of shoes, wearing apparel, watches and other items were taken. Thieves are believed to have fled in an automobile.
Dr J A McCuaig delivered sermons in local churches over the past two days and spoke at today's Rotary Club round table at the Hotel Conn. About fifteen members attended while others were away at the district conference in Duke last night.
The Pennsylvania Gas Company nears completing centre street service line replacements clearing way for street relaying by the city. Council will consider financing via a bond issue likely in the next regular meeting with an ordinance expected to be submitted.
Harrisburg April 2 Governors Fisher postponed the air bill signing today due to rain. A tentative demonstration on approving the measure drew attention as weather worsened. The bill would create a state commission to license and regulate aviators and fields.
Reliability depot project in Memphis announced by Rail Truss organization led by Henry M Baker national director. Initiated to distribute supplies to households with 1000 tents requisitioned. unclear field notes mention Sunbury and other locations. additional fragments describe a jail escape in progress and a wedding notice for Helen Waineght with unrelated health and theater notes.
The American Red Cross chapter in Ames urged continued donations as flood relief totals neared $200. Residents at Ames Drug Store collected funds with officers available until tonight and Wednesday to receive contributions. National totals showed 46 flood relief workers and refugees awaiting aid as camps expanded across the country.
In a Long Island City courtroom on April 16 the state showed a heavy iron window weight used in the alleged murder of Albert Sawder White Ruth by Henry Jad Gray. Witnesses including Arthur Ky Bailey and John Stanford testified Gray bought the weight on March 4, two weeks before the crime as the defense disputed the weapon’s role.
Pittsburgh report says a man in Glairton faced a fatal card game dispute when Mike Musovich drew a revolver and fired. A watch in the upper left west pocket stopped the shot, saving the life of Semack. Musovich pleaded guilty to felonious assault and battery and was paroled for injuries. Bemack is mentioned in the account.
In Jefferson Ohio on April 46 Proys Hewitt a 17 year old boy was found guilty of murder in the brutal killing of Mrs Prod Brow and her servant. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and Hewitt was sentenced to the electric chair with execution set for August.
United Press report from Washington notes President Coolidge's remarks at the United Press diner in New York that foreign policy aims show restraint. The speech reportedly denies charges of aggression, signals no immediate threat to Mexico or China, and pledges compensation for any expropriated American property while urging arbitration.
In Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania on April 25 a key witness admitted graft in a district school misappropriation case. Patrick Joyle testified and implicated other officials while revealing translations that altered contracts and payments.
