Fire at the Esso Standard Oil terminal raged for 36 hours after an explosion hit a 21-tank facility near the waterfront. Ten tanks were badly damaged or burned, two stood buckled, and several others suffered various damage while four firefighters were injured. Damages were estimated between three and four million dollars with replacement costs around 1.5 million.
Senator McClellan urged Senate hearings on broad labor legislation arguing it would be unfair to push bills without giving interested parties a hearing. He supported some amendments but pressed for committee hearings to hear all sides before any final action. Johnson and Knowland move to delay showdown as hearings set to begin May 6 with possible reporting by early June.

A New York research team reports that chronic life stresses can damage brain regions governing needs, drives, and motives. The study compared patients with brain tissue loss from surgery to a control group, finding similar impairments in adjustment, memory, concentration, and decision making, and reduced tolerance for novelty.

A violent windstorm ripped through Corry and nearby areas last night with gusts up to fifty miles per hour. Trees fell and roof damage occurred, notably at the Don ald Bochemer residence on the Corry Spartansburg highway, while utilities reported no major outages. Temperatures dropped to around 24 degrees with a low near 38, and frost is expected tonight. gardeners and farmers warn of potential bud damage before tomorrow.

Titusville 19 year old Mary Ward was cited after a three vehicle wreck near Center and Smith streets last evening. Police say she failed to stop at Center and Smith, striking Lyle Warnstull’s 48 year old car before clipping Ray Burr’s vehicle. Damages totaled about 200, 175, and 225 dollars respectively.
A fast moving forest fire scorched 60 acres of timber and brush on the eastern slope of Summit Mountain, 18 miles east of Uniontown, before containment last night. Thirty five volunteers led by Forest Inspector George B. Martin and Warden A. E. Buriaworth fought the blaze for nearly six hours using trenches and chemicals. Cause undetermined. High winds threatened to extend the fire into lumber land. All damaged land is state owned. No immediate damage estimate available.
Four American students depart by air from New York for London on the first U S Soviet student exchange. They will travel via Copenhagen to Moscow, joining two other Americans already in London. The group includes Ralph Della-Caya and Davie W. Band, with Jay Sorenson and Judith Davison among others. The Soviet side will bring their students to the United States on May 16 for reciprocal visits.
A coast guard report details a two day sea ordeal near Sinclairville as Captain WA. Fears of Brownsville recounts his vessel disabled Tuesday and lost crew member L. Bilive, 22, with the wrecked ship sinking Wednesday. A separate accident near Chautauqua County claims a three year old boy killed by a jogger's vehicle. authorities cite P. Bowers as delivering the ruling on the fatality.
