Stewarts Tavern remembered in oil era days
Old Stewarts Tavern two miles south of Corry on the Stall Road, a landmark of the early oil excitement, burned at 2 39 this morning. The building housed Horace Wetmore's family and belongings. the fire likely started from a defective chimney. Erected in 1819 by Simon Stewart, it was a large wood structure with a famed dance floor and served as a social hub for Erie Crawford and Chatangay counties, hosting markets, cattle drives, and banquets before the railway era reduced its traffic. The tavern once sheltered hundreds and was key to regional trade and social life, later becoming a private dwelling before its destruction.
