Code Change Puts Heat On Registrar

ERIE The women in the Erie County voter registrar office face two hard weeks ahead due to a state election code change. Registrations close 30 days before the spring primary, shortening the prep time for street voter lists to May 6, with printing taking three days. Registrar Mrs Della Desser said overtime will be needed. Candidates rely on the lists to reach registered voters before elections.

Wood Defends No Inquests Policy in Violent Deaths

Erie County Coroner Merle Wood defended his stance against holding juries inquests for violent deaths, arguing the policy saves the county thousands annually. He responded to Democratic candidate Schroeck's suggestion to expand inquests, including a recent fatal shooting of an alleged burglar by Albion police. Wood said the coroner’s inquest is a financial burden and would require jury and witness costs.

207 Percent Rate Hike for PA Malpractice Insurance

Harrisburg report says Argonaut Insurance Co will raise basic malpractice rates 207 percent for about 4,000 Pennsylvania doctors. The $2.2 million annual increase is approved by the state Insurance Department and takes effect as current policies renew. Insurance Commissioner William J. Sheppard cites Argonaut losses as the driver and notes possible legal action to enforce the contract. A stabilizing bill is planned to tie malpractice coverage to an insurer’s broader business rights.
