A journal photographer rode from Five Points to State Line road along Carter Hill road and found a dirt stretch with ruts up to 22 inches deep. The route endangers children and burdens more than 15 families with costly repairs to cars while officials note some grading but cite wet conditions. Page Four continued.
Corry State Police report a 26 year old Spartanshore man Bruce L Fuller was arrested on Route 426 near Cutting during a NY to PA vehicle stop. He faces a possession of a malt beverage by a minor charge with possible $100 fine plus costs.
A car leaving the road and striking an embankment east of Saxonburg killed two Butler County teens, Henry Saunders 17 Cabot and Darryle Elias 16 Saxonburg, injuring five others. Several others were treated and released or listed in fair condition at Butler County Memorial Hospital.
Belgrade parliament named diplomat Marko Nikezic to succeed 87 year old Kota Popovic as Yugoslavia's foreign minister. Nikezic will oversee ministries amid regional tensions and ongoing EU accession talks.
In Wichita Kansas Gene Beatty 17 president of the Kansas Teen Age Safety Association was hospitalized with a broken nose after his car struck a parked vehicle. Police charged him with careless driving.
France argued before a UN panel that the General Assembly lacks power to make peacekeeping recommendations, opposing the United States stance that the assembly can act on peacekeeping matters. France, along with the Soviet Union and 11 other nations, has not paid Congo peacekeeping assessments, contending only the Security Council is authorized to approve such projects.
In Allegheny County Judge Loran L. Lewis approved Andrew Bowden Jr. a 20 year old prisoner’s request to remain in custody until May 13th to complete a course needed for high school credits before his release next Tuesday. This ruling follows his initial plea for extension beyond the original release date.
The Johnson administration voting rights bill faced Southern opposition with claims of unconstitutionality and attempts to alter its structure. Senator Ervin proposed amendments targeting automatic coverage rules and federal registration, arguing existing protections are insufficient and race-based denial of rights persists. the bill would apply to states with low registration or past literacy barriers, potentially covering Alabama Georgia Louisiana Mississippi and parts of six other states.
