Erie City Council Defeats Car Tax Plan Amid Pay Rise Fears
A three member majority opposed a proposed car tax to fund a $4 city pay raise. Mayor Gardner and officials noted Jacobs Co promises to complete pay analysis by July 1. With tax opposition rising and no mid year tax hike, funding may come from an $85,000 unappropriated balance and a temporary loan, potentially triggering a 1957 tax increase. Brabender had advocated the tax prior to a real estate levy increase.
