Erie County Tax Sale Sparks Controversy in Court
Erie April 24 High Court in Pittsburgh hears appeal from Erie County tax sale by the county treasurer. Attorney William E B Vanhauauen Jr argues that county commissioners acted without common decency by selling land from bankrupt owners to raise funds. Representing Provence Pach and the Erie Housing Corp, Wiswich says clients used insurance or other means to cover costs as they built, while opponents say the county aims to take over for taxes and profit from the sale. The case stems from property owned by Florence Ruth and the housing corp, and a county tax lien sale.
