Senate Moves to Oust State Relief Board in Harrisburg

In Harrisburg on April 23 the Senate backed the Batchelor bill to abolish the state emergency relief board while the House approved four bills transferring 5 million dollars from special funds for unemployment relief. The transfers, already passed by the Senate, go to the governor for signature and include 1 million from the Higher Hires fund, 4 million from the motor license fund, 2 million from the liquid fuels tax fund, and 1 million from the state stores fund. With 24 million from the Federal Relief Administration expected to aid 1.7 million Pennsylvanians, a comprehensive relief program is to be devised by lawmakers and the relief board. The Batchelor bill passed 28 to 38 percent and was sent to the House, Democrats opposing the delay amid an ongoing joint legislative investigation into the emergency police board and executive director Rebesk L. Johnson.
