Union shop and wage board shape postwar labor policy
Corry Evening Journal examines the union shop amid postwar labor policy shifts. It notes the Wage Stabilization Board recommending union shop and dues checkoff for about 1,000,000 railroad workers across 17 nonoperating unions, with carriers resisting. It cites the Railway Labor Act amendments of 1951 allowing union shop contracts, North Western and other lines adopting, and the Taft-Hartley Act revision to validate bargaining relationships. The article also mentions AFL unions pressuring Boeing and Douglas toward union shop, and the act’s impact on United Automobile Workers relations.

Union Shop Prevalence Grows in 1951 NA Analysis
A November 1951 Bureau of Labor Statistics study of 2 651 collective agreements covering over 1 million workers found 1 612 agreements or three fifths included some form of union shop. Variants require member maintenance or mandatory joiners with provisions differing for new hires or existing staff. Notable 1951 contracts included Chrysler-DAW and Goodyear. The CIO Steelworkers reported 27 of 66 basic steel agreements contained union shop clauses. States vary, with about one third prohibiting or regulating such arrangements.
