Erie April report shows ten estate owners paid 19,686.38 in occupational taxes while non property owners escaped about 24,327.50. City Treasurer Francis Hagerty says law prevents collection and urges abolishing the tax as it is added to real estate taxes. Last year he collected 8,981 from real estate owners. the rest were exonerated by the county.
A meeting of county officials will review the new civil service list for police appointments amid protests of veterans’ preference. The proposed list places 19 veterans in top 15 slots, with attorney Willem B Washibaugh set to outline legal options to challenge the policy as unconstitutional.
