Pinchot seeks federal funds to fix state roads

Governor Pinchot urged President Hoover to back legislation allowing federal road money to support state highway improvements on a 50-50 basis. He argued aid would ease unemployment and aid rural districts by building rural roads, noting Pennsylvania spends about $4,000 per mile on rural improvements. The letter, sent days before the Pennsylvania primary, faced political criticism as a maneuver to aid independent Republican candidates. Pinchot pressed for federal contributions to roads in Pennsylvania and other states, regardless of highway system type.
