Silver plank and Bryan heir loom in 1896 echo
Older voters recall the Cross of Gold era as William Jennings Bryan’s son leads a push for a bi metal silver plank at the upcoming Democratic convention. The younger Bryan promotes restoring purchasing power to align currency with silver rather than gold. He argues Britain’s move to silver proves success and predicts the U S will join the silver standard. The piece notes this could shape next June’s convention and party lines. Also described is a large unemployed relief project by International Harvester in Chicago, turning a 1000-acre tract into gardens for 4500 workers with quarter-acre plots, tools, and expert instruction to grow vegetables while payrolls are laid off.
