Four Ohioans jailed for area brawl near West Springfield

A group of four Ohio men were sentenced by Judge Burton R. Laub to Erie County Jail terms ranging eight to 23 months after refusing to identify the assailant who injured Millard Schaaf in a November 12, 1955 brawl near West Springfield. Harold Durfee, spared the longest term, argued he could not have struck Schaaf as he fought with Schaaf’s friend Wayne Blood. The others, Harry Smith, Irene Smith, and Donald Geyer, received longer terms for aggravated assault and battery following a tavern confrontation that led to the fatal blow. Separately, Rear Adm. Frederick J. Eakhoff, 68, a Pearl Harbor survivor, died at Palo Alto, California.
