Elgin Man Richard Shook Dies In Erie Crash

An Elgin man, Richard Shook, 25, was killed instantly at 2 15 am today when his Plymouth coupe collided with a Gehe trailer at the Ash Street and Route 20 intersection in Erie. Driver of the trailer, Donald Brace, 31, of Buffalo, fled the scene and was later identified by police. Shook left behind a widow, two children, and his parents, with services pending at Bracken Kent Funeral Home.

Two Tankers Collide Near Gulf Coast, Crews Lost

AP reports two tankers collided off the Gulf of Mexico. The Esso Greensboro, a 40 crew tanker, and the Esso Suez, a 26400 ton super-tanker, caught fire. First mate Brehm was reported killed. several crewmen injured. Coast Guard aircraft and boats were dispatched from Mobile and Corpus Christi to the scene around 4 a.m. OST.

Fire destroys unoccupied Corry dwelling early morning

An early morning fire destroyed an unoccupied four room frame dwelling on East Street about 3:18 am in Corry. Owner James Bennink said remodeling began last July and insurance covered part of the roughly 800 loss. Fire crews from stations No 1 and No 2 battled the blaze, suspect youths may have been involved, electricity had been turned off for months.
