First British Ship Enters Suez Canal
The 3 604 ton freighter West Breeze, chartered by a Hong Kong company, became the first British vessel to pass the Suez Canal since the October British French invasion. It carried peanuts from China to Rotterdam and paid tolls in francs. British captain Cowie refused interviews as a 42 crew included many Chinese. The move follows Western warnings for shippers to avoid the route amid US Egyptian talks.
