General Douglas MacArthur received a warm welcome in Hawaii before departing for Washington and San Francisco. He waved to crowds, accepted honors, and urged allies to pressure China and support Nationalist forces as he travels to congressional hearings amid a backdrop of mixed American sentiment.
A two year old boy was found dead in a shallow post hole fifty yards from his home after a long nine hour search by volunteers and police with bloodhounds. The body of brown haired boy failed to surface for hours before being located in a hole dug for a clothes pot. The search involved residents, rescue dogs, and extensive woods and swamplands as authorities investigated the accidental death.
In Chicago on April 17 Associated Press reports Civn Omar N Bradley, five star peer to Gen. MacArthur, condemns Asia military policy as risking world peace. He says Korea stalemate may persist, opposes preventive war, and asserts foreign policy is not for soldiers to decide. Defense Dept notes policy cleared by State Department and White House.
An unseasonable April snowstorm hit with rapid, hard snowfall and near freezing temperatures. Highway crews deployed hindering trucks on the Curry-Clymer road to aid motorists on Spirit Fill. Forecasters expect the snow to end today with slightly warmer temps to follow later.

A high school youth in Warren developed a sudden mental illness after an incident at home requiring physician and friend restraint before removal to Warren State Hospital for treatment. Rumors claimed involvement in the First Avenue crossing crash and other incidents, which his father and officials deny or downplay. The boy recently received a driving permit and showed back pain prior to Saturday, with officials noting no confirmed link to any crash or field accident.
Red Cross committee plans a community disaster mobilization for April 25, 1964. The test aims to simulate sheltering and mass arrival of evacuees, with many citizens expected to participate. Harrisburg April 17 The State Selective Service director said induction quotas for May and June will include the usual number of students. Henry M. Gross said there is no ruling to defer students beyond scholastic year. He noted many college students are deferred for other reasons such as physical unfitness dependents or other valid deferments. Fire disrupts Hamilton elementary. 300 students affected as classes resume after blaze.
City council weighing traffic signal at East Born Street and North Center Street to ease a stop and go pattern near Cory Memorial Hospital. Highway Department to study best remedy with possible summer repairs and sidewalk concerns to be addressed by engineers and city officials.
Civil Defense workers and Red Cross Disaster and Relief Committee members will be required to sign a loyalty oath Thursday between 7:30 and 9:40 p.m. at the Municipal Building. Walter Stott, chairman, has received a supply of forms to be issued statewide and the oaths must be returned to state headquarters as soon as possible.
Charles Burvicts Whiteley aged 71 of Hartfield New Mayville RD died suddenly this morning after a car accident on Lakeview avenue Mayville. Mrs Hurlett Adims witnessed the crash and tried to stop the vehicle. Deputy Coroner Hy Aaery presided over the inquest noting probable coronary thrombosis. Whiteley had worked at Ajax Ivo and Un is ed Engineering Co before retirement in 1944. He is survived by a son Raz er Whiteley and several relatives. Funeral arrangements were to be announced by Bracket-tating Funeral Home.
Corry soldier Captain Taek Armitage, 69, wounded for the third time while serving near the 38th parallel. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Armitage, were notified by telegram from the Defense Department after he was sent to a hospital in Japan to recuperate. Earlier letters from him claimed he was well and stationed at the 38th Parallel awaiting word on a crossing. He was wounded for the second time about a month ago and returned to his combat outfit on March 10.
Portsmouth dispatch reports the British submarine Attray with 75 personnel aboard vanished after a dive in the English Channel during maneuvers. Royal Navy search vessels, helicopters, and destroyers scoured the area between Weymouth and Portland while officials weighed survival chances and timing of any rescue.
Six year old children due to begin Corry public schools next fall may register tomorrow between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Superintendent Lawrence Downing announced. Parents should report their child to the assigned school. the visit is brief and does not require a parent. Birth date verification or baptismal record may be requested for census purposes.
