Erie Church Destroyed by Fire Friday
Fire discovered about one o'clock Friday gutted the First Presbyterian Church of Erie at Peach and 5th Streets. The Sunday School building saved after a citywide effort by nearly all fire units. East wall collapse during the blaze. A fireman, James Francisco, suffered a broken leg and injuries from debris. Numerous witnesses, including church custodian Oncor Hopkins, reported sparks from the boiler area igniting walls. Prompt alarms and heavy smoke forced evacuation of 21 women and others inside. The 127 year old structure nearly totaled, with continued demolition of remaining walls into the evening. The Elgin Methodist and Blu Eve Wesleyan churches are listed with service times.
