ConRail Created To Merge Seven Railroads
On April 1 at 12:01 a.m. seven bankrupt railroads folded into a government planned system named ConRail. The new agency will modernize lines with public funds, adopt streamlined management and marketing, and decide if a viable east coast railroad can emerge. Little-used branch lines, especially in Northeastern Pennsylvania, will be abandoned as lines are overhauled. Public awareness of changes will be gradual.
