Nixon backs off volunteer Vietnam force plan cited by Laird
Washington AP Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird said the idea of sending only volunteers to Vietnam remains under study due to enlistment problems and concerns about selling voluntary service to families. He noted a 200,000 to 240,000 force level would be needed to consider such a program, as Nixon moves toward a draft-free army by mid-1973. Pentagon sources say enthusiasm faded over the past year.
