Bishop Driven From Trujillo After Pro-Trujillo Attacks
Pro-Trujillo mobs expelled Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Reilly to the capital and attacks forced priests and nuns to flee the western Dominican Republic diocese of San Juan de la Maguana. Police and soldiers protected the bishop briefly as gangs smashed property and disrupted church records following a dispute over national sovereignty and Trujillo’s control of church titles.
